Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

- Reviewed on Switch -

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate released on December 7th, 2018.

The word "Ultimate" is the perfect title for this iteration of Smash Brothers. This game has every single aspect imaginable from all the previous Smash Brothers titles.

This review WILL have Major Spoilers so keep that in mind before continuing...

Smash Bros. Ultimate contains all the music available from many different series. Below is the complete list of series Smash Bros. Ultimate has music for (not including DLC)...

    - Super Smash Bros.

Keep in mind however, you can't simply go to the music and play any song, you have to earn them by playing the actual game itself.

Within Smash Bros. Ultimate, there is in game currency. Two different types of currency as a matter of fact. There is Spirit Points (SP) and there is Gold Coins (G).

You can earn SP by playing the Adventure mode and sending Spirits on tasks (more on this later) and you can earn Gold Coins (G) by playing normal exhibitions with friends or AI.

Win or lose in battles, you always gain Gold so don't worry about keeping a clean winning streak!

You don't just buy Music with the in-game currency, you also can buy...

    - Mii Outfit Costume Parts
    - Spirits
    - Snacks (to level up Spirits)
    - Support Items

These items can be a little bit pricy, but they are completely obtainable whenever you get the right amount, and they are always changing for different time periods.

Now let's talk about the roster of this game because this game indeed has the biggest roster in Smash Brothers History!

Similar to the music aspect of gaining in game currency and buying unlockables, you will start a journey in Smash Bros. Ultimate of unlocking the entire roster!

You don't buy the characters in this game nor have you ever on any Smash Brothers title, but you unlock these characters by playing the "Smash" Mode which essentially is exhibitions.

You play one or more battles and occasionally you will see a challenger appear in a shadow form (outline).

Although you only start the game with a handful of characters, you will have an entire screen filled with characters in no time.

Down below is the entire roster of characters in Smash Bros. Ultimate (not including DLC)...

    - Mario
    - Donkey Kong
    - Link

Each character in Smash Bros. Ultimate has their own special move set / play style of course. There are your heavy hitters such as Donkey Kong, Bowser, King K. Rool, etc.

There are your light speedy characters such as Sonic, Pikachu, Mario, etc.

Then there are shooting characters such as Samus, Link, Mega Man, etc.

Everyone has their own unique play style / move set which creates a very diverse roster / experience.

Along with these fighters, you can also fight with special stats that are obtained through collecting Spirits.

These Spirits are characters / sub characters from a humongous amount of other video game series.

I have had Smash Bros. Ultimate for almost two years now and I still don't have all the Spirits collected which shows how much Longevity this game has!

There are over 1,200 Spirits to collect, and some can even be obtained through buying them at the store or by completing Classic Mode with that particular fighter.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is my most played (longest played) game on my Nintendo Switch and one of the reasons is of course collecting the Spirits, but also the new Adventure Mode!

Starting with Kirby, you as the fighter must go through many different worlds (some symbolizing game series) and free the fighters from a dark spell that has somewhat possessed all of them.

I absolutely got addicted to this game mode and I found myself very satisfied with the ending.

Collecting all the characters and freeing them was a blast, as well as doing the many different minigames / puzzles found within this huge open world!

Don't get me wrong, this game is very time consuming so be prepared to play this game hours at a time, especially the Adventure Mode.

Once you beat Galeem, be prepared for another big world and then face Dharkon which is no easy task (said from experience)!

You will feel very fulfilled after completing this Mode and you will also unlock training centers / dojos to increase your Spirits stats.

You will also get a total of five different stores to spend your SP on as well.

Masahiro Sakurai (Director of Smash Bros. Ultimate) and his team deserve all the credit they deserve in putting everything from the Smash Series into one powerful title, properly dubbed "Ultimate"!

There are endless possibilities of battles, customization, music, adventure, spirits, leveling up, and much more to accomplish in this game and I still have not gotten everything done!

Longevity is the number one thing this game went overboard with, and I absolutely love it!

Pros

    - Longevity
    - Every Character from All Previous Smash Titles is Available
    - Stage Builder
    - Music from Many Series
    - Spirit Collecting is Very Fun and Addicting
    - Fun Interactive Stages to Battle on
    - Very Wide Variety of Items
    - Customization is Amazing (Battle Rules, Stages, Music, Costumes, etc.)

Cons:

    - Spirit Training Time / Item Collecting is a Little Too Long (2 - 6 Real Hours)

My Rating for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (on Switch):

5 / 5
