Kirby's Adventure
- Reviewed on NES Classic -
Kirby's Adventure released on March 23rd, 1993 (in Japan).
On May 1st, 1993, Kirby's Adventure released in North America and then released in Europe on December 9th, 1993.
Definitely one of the most colorful and cheerful games I have ever played, Kirby's Adventure puts you in control of the famous Pink Character Kirby, as he travels across many different worlds and fights many different enemies.
This review WILL have Major Spoilers so keep that in mind before continuing...
This game was a pleasant surprise, as I never played a traditional Kirby game before (only as Kirby in Smash Bros.). With this being said, I sadly did not connect with this game emotionally.
I loved the controls and the enemies and the landscape as it was, but towards the end of the game, I started hoping that the game was almost over.
In Kirby's Adventure you take control of Kirby himself (as mentioned earlier) as you clear out stages within seven different worlds.
Similar to the Mario Series, each world has its own different aesthetic and they each have their own enemy types / powerups that fit in with the stages.
Kirby's Adventure also is helpful for brand new players such as myself, as they give you many tutorials but not in a traditional way.
Normally I found that they would introduce a brand-new enemy (that can be sucked in for a new power), and then there would be a section of the level that required that specific power up. So afterwards I knew that when I saw that puzzle again, I would need that specific power up from that specific enemy.
For Example, there is a puzzle where you must light a fuse to a cannon to reach a secret, and before this puzzle would appear, the game introduced a fire enemy with a fire power up. Put those two things together and I solved the mini puzzle thanks to the level placement of the game!
Kirby's Adventure is one of the first Kirby games out there to be released, and for its generation, (in gaming) it stands out in a very impressive way / fashion.
Music was different and it all fit each specific world throughout the game. The characters were also very memorable, and the enemies had so much variety in this game. The complete list of enemies is below...
- Blade Knight
- Blipper
- Bomber
- Bounder
- Bronto Burt
- Broom Hatter
- Bubbles
- Bugzzy Jr.

When I was not playing the actual stages in the hub world(s), there was also other activities to do such as minigames for extra lives / points.
The game went by pretty fast, and I did not do all the minigames because there was not much variation in the games.
There was only about two or three different minigames in Kirby's Adventure which I found pretty boring after playing each one about three times.
The end boss (SPOILER) was about the same difficulty as the previous enemies / bosses and because of the platform it was made for, the battle itself was pretty straight forward except you had to hit the tail of the boss with the famous Star Rod to finish the game.
I can see why / how Kirby fans would absolutely love this title, this game kick started pretty much the rest of the Kirby Series with its iconic enemies, bosses, items, music, characters, etc.
In the end however, after playing this game, Kirby just did not connect with me emotionally. I loved playing as him but the story and the minigames just did not interest me.
Pros:
- Great Level Design
- Very Creative Characters (Enemies, Bosses, etc.)
- Great Music / Variation
- Pleasant to Look At (Very Colorful / Flashy)
Cons:
- Boring Minigames
- Final Boss is the Same Difficulty as Previous Bosses
- Not that Interesting Story
- Pointless Puzzles Across Worlds
My Rating for Kirby's Adventure (on NES Classic):
3 / 5
