Perseverance
- Reviewed on Switch -
Like mentioned earlier, I did enjoy the graphics style for the main game (2D Visual Novel) but the lack of animation really did a toll on the visual novel title.
Perseverance released on June 30th, 2018.
Perseverance was definitely a great start to a visual novel horror game, but with many flaws, this game did not truly suck me in as a player.
That being said, this game was a fun, quick, hour and a half long game that I would recommend mainly because of its very cheap price on both platforms (as of writing this blog).
This review WILL have Major Spoilers so keep that in mind before continuing...
Right from the beginning I got disappointed which is never a great sign for a video game, movie, tv show, etc. and the main reason was because the beginning cut scene for Perseverance was an impressive 3D graphic style, and then turned into a barely animated, 2D visual novel for the rest of the game.
I genuinely got disappointed because the cut scene looked really nice and I thought the whole game was going in that direction.
However, 3D aside, the 2D visual novel graphics were actually really nice but setting a viewer's expectation and then turning on it in the very beginning was not a good look in my eyes.
In Perseverance, you play as a father named Jack who is in a predicament.
With his daughter not emotionally attached to him, and his wife wanting to possibly leave him to continue her studies, Jack decides to go on a hunting trip that would eventually change all their perspectives on life and family.
Story wise, Perseverance had a great idea and executed this idea to the best of their abilities.
Jack (the main protagonist) goes on a hunting trip and comes across (SPOILER) a mysterious lady at a gas station and this is when all the questions get asked.
Jack eventually finds out that this woman was a test subject of some sort and eventually goes crazy and kills a man in the woods.
You as the main character (Jack), gets to live this whole story in many different ways.
Your options of what to do, and what to say effect the rest of the plot which I did enjoy.
Something this game doesn't tell you is that this visual novel game has more than one part, unfortunately it has been almost three years and there is no sequel to this game.
Perseverance was a fun and short story that really tried its best at hooking you in emotionally, but the sad, unfortunate truth is, this game doesn't really leave an emotional mark on you like the genre is expected to do.
Pros:
- Nice Art Style
- Nice Story Development
Cons:
- Short Game
- Lackluster Ending
- Barely Any Music
- No Animations
- Small Text
- Unattachable Characters (Emotionally)
My Rating for Perseverance (on Switch):
2 / 5
