Little Nightmares

Little Nightmares released on April 28th, 2017.

Probably one of my favorite horror titles I have played in a long time, Little Nightmares is a Puzzle Platformer, Horror Adventure game that takes you on a creepy and disturbing ride.

This review WILL have Major Spoilers so keep that in mind before continuing...

There is not that much negative things to say about Little Nightmares in my opinion.

Little Nightmares is one of those games that I was hooked into from beginning to end and I was so excited the entire playthrough.

I heard of this title a long time ago but never got around to playing it.

I didn't watch any trailers or playthroughs before my turn and thank goodness I didn't because the antagonists in this game are down right terrifying!

The sounds these antagonists (monsters) create when they spot you or just when they are in their idle position(s) are spine-chilling.

I highly recommend playing Little Nightmares with headphones or surround sound because I feel like Tarsier Studios (Developers of Little Nightmares) had one major goal in mind, and that was to make a super stressful game with highly intense chasing sequences.

There is not a single word spoken in Little Nightmares, not by the protagonist (a little boy in a yellow rain jacket), not by the antagonist (multiple ones throughout the chapters), and none from the monsters.

Instead of dialogue there is only terrifying moans / grunts and music. Even the music is eerie and sometimes there won't be any music at all during certain points of the five chapters (not including DLC).

The music in Little Nightmares has a very repetitive nature about it where it will take a normal sound like falling objects or a single tone and replay it over and over again until eventually it starts to frighten you due to the environment (atmosphere) you are in / exploring / escaping.

The 3D platforming, control scheme of Little Nightmares was a lot of fun to use, however, I did have problems sometimes with depth perception and sometimes missing hiding spots due to this.

I don't consider my depth perception, Little Nightmare's fault but I do believe they could've made the hiding spots a tad bit bigger / wider so it was easier to move the main character into these hiding spots from the monster(s).

Hiding in this game is a key mechanic and will either help or kill you as the main character.

Little Nightmares does a great job incorporating key elements of every chapter into these puzzle rooms / areas.

I found that Little Nightmares has two main concepts within the game, a story scene piece and a monster / puzzle solving piece.

If your in (SPOILER) the kitchen / chef chapter, all puzzles in this chapter of the game will be food related.

Also if your in the last couple chapters you will be in the dining room / feeding grounds where you have to escape from extremely hungry monsters.

Little Nightmares understood their type of horror they wanted to present to the player(s) and I appreciate this a lot because lots of horror games will just throw out cheap jump scares or a popular monster (for example zombies) to get that horror genre secured for their title.

Not only did Little Nightmares make a perfect horror game, but they made a perfect story with absolutely no words spoken in the entire game!

Although there are some major glitches like monsters clipping through the hiding spots and getting me, and some checkpoint respawn mistakes, this game is a short and highly recommended horror game!

Pros

    - Great Graphics
    - Amazing Character Designs (Monsters)
    - Terrifying Music / Sounds
    - Lots of Symbolism
    - Very Scary / Stressful (Chasing Sequences)

Cons:

    - Hiding Glitches
    - Short Story / Game

My Rating for Little Nightmares (on PS4):

4 / 5
