The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series

The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series released on September 10th, 2019.

Undoubtedly a game that I will never forget, The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series takes you on a journey of the main protagonist Clementine as she survives a world gone mad.

This game is a collection mind you, so in reality there is five games in one!

The purpose of this Definitive Series was to have all the games in one upgraded package, graphics, sound, and lighting wise.

This review WILL have Major Spoilers so keep that in mind before continuing...

Since there are five games in this collection, let's start with the first season which actually has a different protagonist besides Clementine and that's Lee Everett.

Serving as a father figure for the young Clementine, you take the role of Lee Everett as he must survive this new zombie filled world while taking care of Clementine (or Clem as she is sometimes called as well).

Similar to the TV series, this game has one of the best music soundtracks I have ever listened to while playing a game.

The music makes you feel all the emotions portrayed by its characters and sub characters such as suspense, fear, and of course sadness.

The graphics throughout the entire collection of games, has a comic book feel to it and considering The Walking Dead started out as a comic series, this felt like a homage to the original series by Robert Kirkman.

This entire collection plays off the concept of making your own choices and the story being different each time you play.

I love when games have a lot of longevity within them and this game is the perfect definition of endless runtime, where every time you start the series over again (for each game), you get a different story.

Depending on what you decide to say, do, save, kill, etc. results in a different outcome to certain situations.

This is made very clear in the beginning of every episode for the entire collection.

When Lee (SPOILER) dies from a walker (zombie) bite at the end of episode 5 (first season), the series goes in a different direction entirely now, focusing on Clementine's survival and for the rest of the collection you will see the evolution of Clementine's character.

With a wide variety of characters to meet and either be friends or enemies with, you are always on edge with this collection of games and when you start a new season you can transfer your save data from the previous season and continue with whatever character(s) you left off with, which I thought was brilliant for long term gamers of this series such as myself.

As mentioned earlier, the first game (season) of the series revolved around Lee and his group surviving and traveling to find the perfect home, season two saw Clementine find old friends (such as Kenny and Christa) and a new group and go through rough challenges / losses, however my favorite season (game) in the series is season 3, A New Frontier.

Focusing on Javier Garcia and his family, the game now goes into deep family issues inside the walker infested world.

The game truly knows how to use these new characters for amazing twists, excitement, fear, and downright amazement!

Voice acting is great in this collection, even the first season which was originally made in 2012!

There were a few graphical glitches in this game, regarding the new black graphics mode that is pre-installed in the Definitive Series.

The last thing I adore about this game is how the main protagonist Clementine eventually (in the last season) becomes a parent figure just like Lee was to her in the first game (season).

In season 2 when AJ was born, Clementine's main attention went towards parenting him after both his mom and dad pass away in this horrific world he was born into.

The last season took a completely different approach to gameplay than the other previous seasons (games) in the collection.

The final season had you explore in a third person point of view, in a semi open world environment, whereas the previous games only had a small location each time throughout for you to explore.

In addition to this, you had the option to also obtain collectibles for you to put in the main hub world (room).

I absolutely was blown away with this new gameplay direction because it truly caught me off guard when the past four games all had the same control scheme.

Finally, there were also cameos from cannon Walking Dead characters such as Glenn, Jesus, and Michonne who had her own game within this collection.

I do wish Michonne's episodes were longer, but besides that, it was a fun look into the mind of Michonne and her true backstory.

Pros

    - Outstanding Story (Across All Five Games)
    - Amazing Characters (Good and Bad)
    - Great Music
    - Scary at Times
    - Great Voice Acting
    - Good Character Development (Mainly for Clementine)
    - Easy Trophies / Achievements
    - Collectibles (The Final Season)

Cons:

    - Short Michonne Story
    - Graphical Glitches (When Using Black Graphics Mode)

My Rating for The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series (on PS4):

5 / 5
