Luigi's Mansion 3

- Reviewed on Switch -

Luigi's Mansion 3 released on October 31st, 2019.

The Luigi's Mansion series is one of my all time, favorite Nintendo Series.

Luigi is the perfect character in the Mario universe to portray the main protagonist.

With that being said, Luigi's Mansion 3 captures all the aspects that made the previous two installments great, and added more to those already perfect mechanics for this type of game / genre.

This review WILL have Major Spoilers so keep that in mind before continuing...

The main story of Luigi's Mansion 3 surrounds Luigi and his brother Mario, along with Peach, Multiple Toads, and eventually Professor E. Gadd, arriving to this humongous (very tall) hotel.

Immediately after that, everything goes down hill for our hero Luigi and his companions.

King Boo arrives yet again and (SPOILER) captures everyone in their own specific painting, except for Luigi of course.

The very silly humor Nintendo puts into this series, truly shows in this game.

Right off the bat you can see ghosts in disguise and eventually you notice that the main antagonist Hellen Gravely is after Luigi and his friends.

I will admit that even though some of the ghosts resemble previous ghosts in the other Luigi's Mansion games, the design of the main antagonist and the sub bosses look very well designed / unique.

On the topic of design, the power of the Nintendo Switch is prominent in Luigi's Mansion 3, as the graphics are unbelievable compared to other Switch titles (that I have played).

This game is very well polished and the animations are very astonishing in the players movement, facial reactions, and combat.

Story progression is unique and I love the way they portrayed the constant levels of progression in the hotel.

Luigi has to collect Elevator Buttons, to progress to each floor of the hotel.

What Nintendo did that impressed me was that they had no loading screens for the hotel, instead allowing you to wonder the elevator and play around until the elevator stops on the next floor.

As the elevator is ascending (or descending) the game is loading in the next floor / cut scenes.

The amount of ghosts / bosses Luigi encounters in this game is bigger than normal compared to the previous games in the series.

Due to this however, it gives Nintendo the perfect situation to add in multiplayer to the actual story (campaign) of Luigi's Mansion 3!

Gooigi is a green slime version of Luigi, created by Professor E. Gadd in the early part of the story.

You can play with another player on the same switch and complete the story together, one as Luigi and the other as Gooigi.

Gooigi isn't in the game just for battling, he's actually a crucial part of the game overall.

Even if you play solo (like I did / do), you can switch between Luigi and Gooigi to not only battle, but solve puzzles (both optional and mandatory) and work on collecting the collectibles in the hotel.

Each floor has its own gem(s) to collect and they all have (depending on the floor your on) different designs to match the theme of the floor your on.

There's lots of positives to this game but there are flaws I didn't enjoy about Luigi's Mansion 3 like the combat scheme where Luigi can swing ghosts around and hit other ghosts for an advantage.

The control scheme felt too easy for both new and experienced Luigi's Mansion players and combine that with a lackluster King Boo battle (at the end) and I felt unaccomplished after beating the game.

With that being said, the positives out weigh the negatives and Luigi's Mansion 3 is still a must play for fans of the series!

Pros

    - Great Loading Mechanics
    - Amazing Animations
    - Outstanding Graphics
    - Good Music (Before and After Combat)
    - Very Fun / Unique Multiplayer
    - Collectibles (Gems)
    - Original Characters from Mario Universe

Cons:

    - Too Easy Combat
    - Lackluster Ending

My Rating for Luigi's Mansion 3 (on Switch):

4 / 5
