Super Mario 3D World

- Reviewed on Switch -

Super Mario 3D World released on November 21st, 2013.

As someone who never played Super Mario 3D World on the Wii U when it first came out, when Super Mario 3D World re-released on the Nintendo Switch, I was very excited to pick up this Mario game immediately.

Super Mario 3D World was re-released for the Switch on February 12th, 2021.

This review WILL have Major Spoilers so keep that in mind before continuing...

Bowser is of course back to his shenanigans but this time, instead of capturing Peach, he has captured multiple different fairies (called Sprixies) for Mario and friends (you) to save.

You can play as multiple different characters in Super Mario 3D World. These characters include...

    - Mario
    - Luigi
    - Peach
    - Toad (Blue)
    - Rosalina (After Beating World Star - 2)

Each character has their own special attributes that can benefit (and hurt) your playthrough.

The special traits for each character are...

    - Mario = None
    - Luigi = High Jumping
    - Peach = Floating (After Jumping)
    - Toad = Fast Running
    - Rosalina = Spin Attack (No Power Up Required)

This is absolutely brilliant for Nintendo to add in this title as it gives each character a special purpose in the game.

Graphics wise, this game surpasses expectations even though all recent Mario games, remasters or not, have been visually appealing and well made.

The power ups in this game are classic but I feel like they (Nintendo) should've added more new items to the game as this might have been a lot of players' introduction to Super Mario 3D World like myself.

The DLC to this title is new however, that being the Bowser's Fury story.

In this fun, unique story, Mario (you) tags along with Bowser Jr. to collect Cat Shines and stop Bowsers decent into madness.

Say what you want about Bowsers new monster form, it is the coolest Bowser transformation I've seen so far (as of writing this blog post).

Bowsers Fury, although repetitive, has a fun and enjoyable open world (kind of) to explore, section by section, filled with enemies old and new, and puzzles galore.

Going back to the main game now, the bosses (and enemies) of Super Mario 3D World are definitely memorable as they blend (resemble) the world's atmosphere of sorts.

Lets say your in the lava world (level), you will get lava related enemies, and vise versa with ice related levels (worlds).

Super Mario 3D World follows the same Mario theme / structure with its many worlds, one by one to complete, solo or with friends, but the 3D type game design is so much more appealing to me (and fun) than a traditional 2D Mario title.

Collectibles are at a all time high in this game!

There are so many collectibles in this 3D Mario entry, causing endless fun and limitless replayability.

You can collect Green Stars, Stamps, Golden Flags, and much more.

The one game feature I adore the most is the side activities anyone can get used to, that being the Toad levels, the Minigame levels, the Roulette Wheel of 1-Ups, and more!

For people who never played Super Mario 3D World back in 2013, this is definitely a must for your Switch library but for those already familiar with this title, Bowsers Fury is not a great benefit for rebuying a full Mario title (in my opinion).

Pros

    - Great Graphics
    - Upbeat Music
    - Character Variety (Including Special Traits)
    - Memorable Enemies
    - No Frame Rate Drops (Lag)
    - Very Fun Multiplayer, Side Activities, and Collectibles

Cons:

    - Forgettable DLC
    - Repetitive DLC
    - Lack of New Items

My Rating for Super Mario 3D World (on Switch):

4 / 5
