Resident Evil 4
- Reviewed on PS4 -
The voice acting is understandable for its time, in regards of how cheesy, and weird they turn out.
I've mentioned boss, enemy design before, but what RE4 does differently that makes it more enjoyable, is the fact that the design was unthinkable for me in the moment.
Resident Evil 4 released on January 11th, 2005.
This game has released on many different consoles throughout the years, and for this review I will be reviewing the PS4 version of Resident Evil 4.
Resident Evil 4 was released on the PS4 on August 29th, 2016.
This review WILL have Major Spoilers so keep that in mind before continuing...
Undoubtedly a fan favorite of the series, Resident Evil 4 takes us on a long rescue mission as we play as Leon Scott Kennedy.
I knew about the fan love for this entry in the series beforehand, and after completing this game for the first time I can say now, I understand why people adore this specific entry.
Turning away slightly from the abundance of puzzles and focusing more on combat was a huge positive for me in this game, as I never was a fan of the really complicated puzzles, Resident Evil was known for.
Back to the story of RE4, Leon is tasked of saving the president's daughter Ashley Graham from this cult like society somewhere in Europe.
I really liked the concept of the story, and it truly gave a purpose for Leon (you) to be forced into going in obviously, dangerous areas.
The random, flirtatious remarks by everyone in this game was unexpected too and doesn't play a role in story progression, it's just there per say without any cause-and-effect reaction.
I did love how many obstacles Leon (you) had to go through to finally escape with Ashley, as each big twist (obstacle) served as a reset for enemy types, location changes, music enhancements, etc.
Now, about the controls.
I'll admit, in the very beginning of RE4, where (SPOILER) Leon gets out of the car and the police officers get attacked, the aiming for this game was atrocious, but the red dot on every gun was a game changer, and really the only solution for the type of combat RE4 has / had.
After a while, you truly do get a grip on the controls and the rest is history. Once you get an understanding of how to aim and move, the game is very enjoyable, in terms of combat, which there is a lot of.
Enemy design is simple for the base enemies like villagers, but the bosses of Resident Evil 4 are amazing and well thought out.
I never would've guessed / imagined the designs (transformations) these humans would become and that made it not only unique but scary as well.
The supporting cast of characters like Ada, Ingrid, Luis, Ramon, Bitores, etc. are all in the game for very, well thought out purposes.
To me there isn't a single character in this game that is just "there" for no reason.
The final mechanic to this game that I really enjoyed and has multiple benefits to you (as the player) and the games progression, is the merchant.
Starting in Chapter 1-2, this unnamed individual who goes simply by "Merchant" is your source for new weapons, attachments, maps, first aid, and much more.
You can sell items as well for currency, which in RE4 is called The Peseta.
Adding currency to this game gives you a reason to explore everywhere and break all breakable objects, as Pesetas are valuable for new weapons that appear in later chapters (as you progress).
The extra modes you unlock after completing the main campaign are...
- Separate Ways
- Assignment Ada
- The Mercenaries
Overall, this Resident Evil game will definitely be more memorable than others (as of writing this blog post) and after playing through the campaign and all the extras, I now know why other gamers love this entry for how different the approach was to this genre that RE4 took.
Pros:
- Great Story / Plot
- Fun Gameplay
- Merchant / Buyable Items
- Boss Designs
- Level Designs
- Variety of Weapons, Enemies, Locations, etc.
Cons:
- Bad Controls (Can Get Used To)
- Unneeded Flirtatious Dialogue
- Unmemorable Extra Game Modes
My Rating for Resident Evil 4 (on PS4):
4 / 5
