Marvel's Spider-Man: Game of the Year Edition

Marvel's Spider-Man: Game of the Year Edition released on September 7th, 2018.

This superhero title was a game I always wanted to buy and play, and finally, after putting it off for a while, I got the opportunity to play this highly praised title, and it did not disappoint me in the slightest.

Everything I hoped this game would be / feel was exactly portrayed when I pressed play and although there is one feature I did not like, everything else was near perfection!

This review WILL have Major Spoilers so keep that in mind before continuing...

The very popular lore behind Spider-Man is truly put to its best in this title and right from the beginning your thrown into the life of Peter Parker.

The classic, humorous, one liners and jokes Peter (Spider-Man) makes in this game is very appropriate for the hero and adds for more realism in this / his character.

The voice acting overall is outstanding in this game by everyone, and while the enemies / thugs in this game do repeat often, this was a very minor inconvenience and when your sucked into this game by how it makes you feel (during combat and story scenes), you don't really notice it that easily while playing (at least for me).

The voice acting was great, but so was the immersive music and the way it was programmed (while swinging through the world and during combat).

The music, for example, will gradually get more intense (higher pitch, faster, etc.) during your combat sequences but no matter how fast / slow you finish them, the music somehow stays adjacent to your pace.

On the topic of combat, this game kind of resembles (reminds me) the Batman: Arkham series' combat.

The vast amounts of moves you can perform is amazing, and the moves list option / menu is definitely a nice touch, although I never really looked into these moves and only did the moves I knew by heart.

The Manhattan setting for this game is beautiful and well-polished (great graphics).

The collectibles in this game (side activities) are definitely worthwhile as they serve as tokens (resources) to upgrade / unlock other gadgets and suits.

The resources / tokens that can be found (unlocked or completed) are...

    - Crime Tokens
    - Backpack Tokens
    - Base Tokens
    - Landmark Tokens
    - Research Tokens
    - Challenge Tokens

Gadgets (as mentioned earlier) can help you take down enemies in different / unique ways and earn you XP as well to level up.

These gadgets in this title include...

    - Web Shooter
    - Impact Web
    - Spider-Drone
    - Electric Web
    - Web Bomb
    - Trip Mine
    - Concussive Blast
    - Suspension Matrix

I mentioned earlier that there was one feature I did not like in this near perfect game, and that was the Challenges (for Taskmaster).

It might have something to do with my "perfectionist" gameplay style (as of writing this blog post), where if I don't get gold for all these challenges, I get down on myself and can't stop thinking about them while playing through the other missions.

The challenges kind of sucked the fun out of this game for me considering all the previous collectibles were very easy and all of a sudden there was something "too" challenging.

Obviously, that's the point of these "challenges" but due to my playstyle I didn't enjoy these.

The stealth in this game is very well executed and enjoyable while in combat scenarios and really gives the player(s) choices in how to maneuver in these situations.

Sometimes it's mandatory for a specific combat style (aggressive or quietly) and this can be a hassle at times when you're not in the mood to plot out your steps and just want to throw hands.

The Game of the Year Edition for this title includes the base game and all the DLC ever released which elongates the story as well.

In the menu, you can see the percentage of your progress in the...

    - Main Story
    - The Heist
    - Turf Wars
    - Silver Lining

Photo Mode is of course in this title, and I am always a sucker for these features, as they are extremely fun and have endless possibilities!

The main story is very memorable, and with the many side activities you can do and the DLC, this is a must play title even if you're not a superhero type of gamer!

Pros

    - Amazing Graphics
    - Extremely Fun Gameplay (Traveling, Combat, Skills, etc.)
    - Memorable Story (and DLC)
    - Gadgets to Use
    - Great Voice Acting
    - Collectibles
    - Spider-Man Themed Music

Cons:

    - Challenges (Taskmaster)
    - Repeated Enemy NPC Dialogue / Look

My Rating for Marvel's Spider-Man: Game of the Year Edition (on PS4):

5 / 5
