Metro 2033 Redux

Metro 2033 Redux released on August 26th, 2014.

Based on the popular novel by Dmitry Glukhovsky, Metro 2033 Redux is a very unique and action-packed game for all fans of the series, whether that be the books, games, or both!

This review WILL have Major Spoilers so keep that in mind before continuing...

Following the story of main protagonist Artyom, in a post-apocalyptic Moscow, Russia, 4A Games did a wonderful and truly unique job of showing Artyom's journey (SPOILER), starting with how the game ends.

To specify what I mean by that is, in the very beginning you're playing as Artyom (although you don't know that clearly) and eventually make your way (with your future team) to the final destination of Artyom's journey (and the game overall), the Tower.

This beginning scene has an abrupt ending, and then transports you to the very beginning of Artyom's metro lifestyle, and you follow the events of the story that eventually lead back up to the Tower (literally).

With the beginning now explained, the actual gameplay is a different story.

I will flat out say it, the controls for this game are very confusing in the beginning, but luckily for me, towards the latter half of the campaign (story) I got used to it, but if you were to take long breaks (like I did) from the game, you might have to search the controls again because of how much there is to control.

Sometimes mechanics wouldn't work for me, like the night vision goggles, and sometimes one button would have multiple functions and you wouldn't be able to know / figure out the reasoning(s) behind this.

The Russian voice acting is pretty decent for Metro 2033 Redux and 4A Games did something different with their protagonist (Artyom) and his talking, where he only talked during the transitions between chapters.

Some might enjoy this unique dialogue option for Artyom, and some might not, for me personally, I am split between liking and disliking it, there were some parts in the game where dialogue (from Artyom) could've made scenes more intense / believable and vice versa.

Voice acting was subtle here, but Artyom's dialogue was worth mentioning because of how it affected the plot progression / character development for first time players of the title.

As mentioned earlier, Metro 2033 Redux is split into chapters where you can collect hidden items (collectibles), buy weapons, ammo, supplies, attachments, etc.

The NPCs in this game are also very intelligent and actually help you in battle, which makes this game feel livelier when you're fighting the mutants above ground or deep in the metros.

For example, when you're exploring the metros in groups, the NPCs are very lifelike with their dialogue (with one another) and their movements / actions are believable, and that made me feel like I was actually there in the metros fighting for survival, which, at the end of the day, is a game designers' purpose / goal.

The exchange system in Metro 2033 Redux (buying / selling) can be confusing, as it seems like 4A Games didn't put much effort into this game mechanic, but by doing further research (on your own) on the purpose of additional currency, you will (eventually) understand.

The moment I learned what this game was about, and learned the lore / plot, I was immediately invested.

The post-apocalyptic genre might not be for everyone, but this game truly caught my attention, and I even bought the novel for this series, and can't wait to live the journey again (as of writing this blog post)!
