Donut County
- Reviewed on Switch -
Donut County is only about two hours in length, if you follow all the main objectives continuously, like I did in my play through.
As mentioned earlier, you play as BK and his remote control that spawns in the hole in the ground.
Donut County released on July 31st, 2018.
A game that I feel deserves more credit and recognition, Donut County is a game created by Ben Esposito.
Ben and his team took a simple concept of playing as a hole in the floor and took it to the next level, thinking of unique ways to add more to this style of gameplay I would eventually adore.
This review WILL have Major Spoilers so keep that in mind before continuing...
The game takes place in an alternate, fabricated version of Los Angeles.
With the majority of characters being talking animals, the main two protagonists in this title are BK, a talking raccoon that you play as, and his human best friend Mira.
The story itself is about (SPOILER) retelling everyone's journey / situation when BK swallowed their homes (or work) with his remote-control device that he uses that opens up holes in the ground to swallow anything and everything (as long as the hole is big enough).
All the characters are below ground and each one retells their story by a campfire, and that vary story is when the gameplay actually begins.
All the characters in Donut County have different occupations and lifestyles and are all unique in their own way.
These characters are...
- BK
- Mira
- Bearclaw
- Chef
- Coco
- Coyote
- Dollop
- Helen
- Jellybean
- Kevin
- Morsel
- Nicky
- Pepper
- Police Chief
- Possum
- Potter
- Pup
- Roma
- Salt
- Trash King
The gameplay itself is satisfying when you're trying to gather up all the objectives (items, characters, etc.).
Each level, you begin as a small hole and have to work your way up by swallowing small objects, then as you progress, the hole gets bigger and bigger for you to gather up all the items and complete the level (the characters story).
After every level is completed, you get new entries unlocked for your encyclopedia, or in this case, Donut County calls it a Trashopedia.
You can easily take breaks (or quit the game) after each level because they have a start screen for each level and each level itself isn't that long to complete.
Donut County is a perfect game (I believe) for non-gamers as well with its easy nature, lovable characters (and dialogue), cartoonish graphics, story length, and music (although I wasn't a fan of the music or the two-hour gameplay length).
Pros:
- Humorous Nature / Dialogue
- Nice Story
- Unlockables (for The Trashopedia)
- Wide Variety of Characters and Backstory
- Fun and Unique Gameplay
- Excellent Graphics
Cons:
- Short Game Overall
- Uninteresting Music (for Me Personally)
My Rating for Donut County (on Switch):
4 / 5
