Resident Evil 6
- Reviewed on PS4 -
The graphics during cutscenes are a huge step up compared to previous games in the series like Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5.
Music is always essential to immersion for a player (at least for me), and although RE6 does have good music, the only memorable piece (to me) is the main menu's theme, which is disappointing to think about considering previous RE titles had amazing, memorable tracks (occasionally).
Resident Evil 6 released on October 2nd, 2012.
My expectations for Resident Evil 6 were to be a clone of sorts to the previous action-packed installments, but upon loading up the campaign, I was blown away.
All my expectations were trampled (in a good way) as this entry in the series goes above and beyond with its storytelling.
This review WILL have Major Spoilers so keep that in mind before continuing...
The biggest shock to me in RE6 was the multiple campaigns and the multiple characters to choose from.
You get to play four different stories that eventually intervene with each other around one overall plot.
Not only this, but each campaign (story) has two playable characters to choose from (for both solo and / or multiplayer).
These characters (stories) are...
- Leon and Helena
- Chris and Piers
- Jake and Sherry
- Ada
Each character has its own unique visuals (HUD wise) and of course... plot.
The game's locations such as (SPOILER) Edonia, China, the Seabed Laboratory, and more, are amazing to explore as well, considering you will sometimes revisit them for another character's plot (story / campaign).
Voice acting is decent... nothing truly stands out, except for Chris's voice actor (Roger Craig Smith) and Jake Muller's voice actor, the legendary... Troy Baker (one of my favorites, as of writing this blog post).
The introduction to Jake Muller in Resident Evil 6 really enhanced (grabbed my attention) my experience with RE6, as this was Jake's first appearance.
Learning the backstory of Jake was very interesting, resulting in his campaign being one of my favorites (as of writing this blog post).
The combat in RE6 got kind of boring after my first character campaign session, but the addition of dodging, rolling, jumping, etc. really makes for fun and new ways to defeat enemies.
Replayability is very present in this entry, as not only can you replay each campaign as the opposite character, but there are plenty of extras to try and obtain.
Some extras include medals, rankings, files, dog tags, and even special blue emblems that are hidden in each level throughout the game.
Every character has a reoccurring, boss type enemy.
The enemies in general are very unique and have different characteristics (playstyles) for you to learn and adapt to.
The main bosses of Resident Evil 6 (SPOILER) include...
- Mutated Deborah
- Ustanak
- Mutated Derek Simmons
- Ogroman
- Iluzija
- Haos
- Ubistvo
- Derek Simmons (as a T-Rex type Monster)
- Derek Simmons (as a Rhino type Monster)
You can also find Skill Points found within the campaigns (in crates and after defeating big enemies / sub bosses) to unlock special skills for the extra modes and the campaign itself (limited to three at a time though).
Resident Evil 6 might not appeal to a lot of hardcore, Resident Evil fans, as it takes on more of an action-packed genre than a horror genre... (in my opinion), but it is still definitely worth your time if you liked the previous RE installments such as RE4 and RE5.
Pros:
- Plethora of Collectibles
- Great Replayability
- Amazing Voice Acting
- Improved Graphics (At Least for Cut Scenes)
- Fun and Interesting Locations
- Satisfying Combat
- Multiple, Playable Characters
Cons:
- Only Three Skills per Set
- Decent Game Modes (Extras)
- Not that Memorable Music
My Rating for Resident Evil 6 (on PS4):
4 / 5
