Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl

- Reviewed on PS4 -

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl released on October 5th, 2021.

Involving many memorable Nickelodeon characters from a vast variety of past and present TV Shows, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is a fun combination of beloved characters and the highly addictive fighting genre all in one!

Although the unlockables (extras) and customization might be a bit debatable to some players, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is a great addition to your gaming library, if given the chance.

This review WILL have Major Spoilers so keep that in mind before continuing...

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is / was a title I was a bit unsure of at first.

It did have my favorite characters like SpongeBob, Aang, and Korra, but the fighting genre honestly made me a little nervous, relating to my enjoyment of the game.

Surprisingly however, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is / was a great time (as of writing this blog post)!

I found the vibrant roster of fighters (characters) enjoyable and well made (move set, graphics, etc.).

One great inclusion to the roster, is the voice acting from original voice actors!

This voice acting for the characters, gave the gameplay (combat) a lot more depth and humor.

Speaking of gameplay, you only have a small amount of game modes to choose from.

These game modes include Battle Mode, Arcade Mode, and Online Mode.

To Ludosity and Fair Play Labs' (Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl's developers) credit, they did include a special Sports Mode, giving you the opportunity to score points with a variety of balls in-game, including soccer balls, footballs, and character themed balls as well.

With these game modes, comes a great roster (typically). Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl's roster includes (as of writing this blog post)...

    - Helga
    - Danny Phantom
    - Sandy Cheeks
    - Zim
    - Nigel Thornberry
    - Michelangelo
    - Leonardo
    - April O'Neil
    - SpongeBob SquarePants
    - Patrick Star
    - Reptar
    - Lincoln Loud
    - Lucy Loud
    - Oblina
    - Powdered Toast Man
    - Ren Hoek
    - Stimpy J. Cat
    - Aang
    - Korra
    - CatDog
    - Shredder
    - Toph
    - Garfield
    - Jenny XJ-9 Wakeman (DLC)
    - Hugh Neutron (DLC)
    - Rocko (DLC)

Of course, more characters will most likely be added down the road, but as of playing and reviewing Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, the roster is just fine (at least for me)!

This roster (as mentioned before) is absolutely well made for old and new Nickelodeon fans alike.

And with the vast amounts of shows this roster represents (new and old), this only helps grab the attention of older audiences like me, to pick this game up and see what it has to offer.

The actual combat in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is nothing special except you have light, medium, and heavy attacks for you to secure victory.

The graphics, however, are absolutely stunning!

Even with the show-based stages like Jellyfish Fields or Omashu, the graphics immerse you into each stage as if you were participating in that show!

The lighting, music, and background sounds all add to the immersion and is near perfection for a fighting (3D) stage / game.

The unlockables are acquired by completing the Arcade Mode with any and all characters.

For example, if you complete Arcade Mode with Korra, you can / will unlock concept art and / or music for that character's specific show (universe).

The customization, like outfits, isn't nearly as strong in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl compared to other fighting games, but this shouldn't hinder your enjoyment completely (though understandable if it does).

Just like the graphics being stunning, the animations for everything and everyone in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl are also absolutely stunning, smooth, pleasant to look at, and matches that character's personality perfectly!

The animations during combat, idle stances, etc. all are a joy to watch and add more "life" to the characters and battles.

For Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, longevity will mostly be dependent on the players passion for fighting games (fighting genre as a whole).

If you're a huge fighting genre fan, then the arcade mode, online mode, and substantial extras (unlockables) will suffice... for the time being.

However, I'm afraid the longevity might not be enough for casual players (of the fighting genre), with only additional (new) characters being the reason to come back here and there, and also, the unlockables can keep you wanting more, if that's your forte.

In conclusion, with the vast variety of Nickelodeon characters past and present, and the simple combat controls most people can get a grip on, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is definitely a game I recommend and even if you don't play for long, your time spent will surely be memorable, as it was mine!

Pros

    - Outstanding (and Impressive) Graphics
    - Voice Acting
    - Good Music
    - Plethora of Characters
    - Show Based Stages
    - Simple Controls

Cons:

    - Not that Many Game Modes
    - Lackluster Unlockables
    - Unfortunate Longevity (at least for me)
    - Repetitive Nature

My Rating for Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl (on PS4):

3 / 5
