Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality

- Reviewed on PSVR -

Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality released on April 15th, 2017.

Developed by Owlchemy Labs and Other Ocean Group, Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality is a short but very enjoyable VR (Virtual Reality) experience for fans of the Rick and Morty series / franchise.

With fun minigames and scenarios that put the VR capabilities to its test, Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality is a great title to play if you're a beginner to VR or even a seasoned player!

This review WILL have Major Spoilers so keep that in mind before continuing...

Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality is about two hours in length, however, upon completing the humorous story, Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality is more about the sandbox nature of gameplay.

When entering this title, you are greeted each time with an optimizing feature that allows you to adjust your Clone Morty's (you) height and help the game calibrate all your VR equipment.

For PSVR at least, you'll need the PS Camera, Motion Controllers, and the VR Headset.

Afterwards your entered into the living room of the Sanchez household. This 3D generated house from the 2D cartoon was excellent and spot on with the real home!

My expectations going into Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality was for me to experience a full-fledged story (campaign), but after seeing the Discs in the hub world (living room), I realized this VR title is simply one huge minigame spree with sandbox features (gameplay).

I was a tad disappointed with the game length, but that didn't stop my enjoyment as a whole.

Like I said, there are Discs in the hub world that you unlock one by one, which puts you into Rick's garage.

These Discs are the "campaign missions" per say, and seeing Rick and Morty in VR right in front of me was mind-blowing!

At least on PSVR, the audio from all the voices sounded muffled, but still intelligible, and made me laugh all the way through with the full voice acting from the show. All the voice actors from the show are in Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality!

The fourth wall breaking jokes from Rick and Morty are everywhere, especially when looking at your watch and getting in-game hints from the crew.

Rick will give you missions (tasks) to do as a Clone Morty and the entire story of the game (SPOILER) is about Rick tricking you and doing these deadly tasks, JUST to get the perfect laundry detergent.

There is a lot to do and experiment with in Rick's garage, which is the main location of the game besides the few portal worlds (consisting of the Bathroom, Space, and even a Monster Planet).

I would've liked to go to more worlds instead of just focusing my attention in Rick's garage, however, there are minigames to also play inside of the famous garage and other worlds.

Some minigames include shooting creatures with space cannon guns (attached to your hands), charging various batteries with quick time events, combining anything and everything with the combiner tool, or even playing Roy: A Life Well Lived.

There are also Easter Eggs in Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality for you to search (quite literally) in VR. These include Cassette Tapes from other characters, Fake Doors, Finding Jerry, Comics, Photos, and even (SPOILER) a Tiny Rick statue when finishing the game.

Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality shows an arrow constantly on your floor (in-game) that points to where the PS Camera is, which I found extremely useful for the plethora of times I raged at the sensors not allowing me to grab items and interact with needed objects.

If there is other obstacles outside your reach (since you can only teleport to places the gamer wants you too), you can throw these spawners and use Meeseeks to open up a wide variety of possibilities!

Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality wasn't my first VR title I played, but the sheer magnitude of the in-game world made certain parts absolutely jaw dropping, like the alien creature coming down to earth, or even becoming a huge Clone Morty while in space with Rick.

In the end, if you love Rick and Morty like I do, and have a VR headset (with the required accessories), Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality is a great adventure for you to experience yourself and doesn't pressure you to do as the game says. Although short, the longevity is definitely endless!
