Injustice: Gods Among Us released on April 16th, 2013.
For this specific review of Injustice: Gods Among Us, I will be discussing the Ultimate Edition (on PS4).
There is also a mobile game for Injustice: Gods Among Us, but that won't be discussed due to the varied differences compared to the console title.
Developed by NetherRealm Studios, Injustice: Gods Among Us is an action / fighting game that puts you in control of various DC heroes / villains in intense one on one combat.
This review WILL have Major Spoilers so keep that in mind before continuing...
Injustice: Gods Among Us is a solid approach to the fighting game genre that offers players a wide variety of 30 characters, each with their own unique combos, special moves, victory scenes, and more!
The Ultimate Edition of Injustice: Gods Among Us gives gamers a lot more content to not only improve the longevity of the game, but also gives players new cosmetics (skins), characters, and S.T.A.R Lab Missions (more on that later) to further enhance your enjoyment of the game.
Weirdly though, since I played (and am reviewing) the Ultimate Edition and have these extras pre-installed already, unlocking these same extras (skins, characters, etc.) are still in the game, even though there for these extras I already have unlocked?!
You can view these unlockables in the games' Archives mode.
Even though I have majority of the unlockables already due to the version of the game, there are however, still more unlockables the Ultimate Edition doesn't give you.
The Archives allow you to spend Armory Keys and Access Cards (obtained by playing and leveling up) on various categories, including...
- Extras
- Characters
- Concept Art
- Music
- Backgrounds
- Costumes (again, already unlocked, but still purchasable in the Ultimate Edition weirdly)
The other game modes in Injustice: Gods Among Us, vary from Story Mode, Battles, S.T.A.R Labs, Single Fights, Training, and Multiplayer (offline and online).
Battles is a mode where you can choose one character and then play through multiple opponents nonstop to get a character ending.
You can rewatch these specific character endings you unlocked by going back to the Archives anytime, which I found very convenient.
S.T.A.R Lab Missions is definitely my least favorite game mode (as of writing this blog post) as it is simply just challenges with poorly scripted, text-based conversations between characters. Still worth trying though if you want to unlock everything in the game.
Single Fights is self-explanatory, as it is just your casual exhibition mode.
The 15 arenas in Injustice: Gods Among Us all have outstanding visuals and even transitions that can be accessed mid battle when heavy hitting your opponent to specific sides of the field.
In all arenas you can also interact with background elements to either help you fight or dodge your enemy.
Training is crucial for serious fighting game players, not just for this title, but all fighting games.
Here is where you can endlessly practice combos and basic fighting techniques for any unlocked character(s).
Story Mode is definitely the highlight of Injustice: Gods Among Us, but even this five-hour story has its flaws, like frame rate drops (at least on PS4) and dated graphics / character models.
The story revolves around (SPOILER) different universes where Superman has gone mad after Joker tricked him into killing Lois Lane and nuking Metropolis. You must play as various heroes and villains to resolve all the issues and counter the twists and turns.
There are quick time events you can use the PS4 touch pad for to get an advantage in the proceeding battle(s), which made me pay more attention to every little detail, in this otherwise, great story.
Now, most importantly, the full list of characters in Injustice: Gods Among Us (including the Ultimate Edition DLC) are...
- The Flash
- Nightwing
- Batman
- Lobo
- The Joker
- Harley Quinn
- Solomon Grundy
- Cyborg
- Green Arrow
- Superman
- Martian Manhunter
- Zod
- Lex Luthor
- Catwoman
- Deathstroke
- Raven
- Aquaman
- Wonder Woman
- Zatanna
- Scorpion
- Ares
- Killer Frost
- Doomsday
- Hawkgirl
- Shazam
- Green Lantern
- Batgirl
- Sinestro
- Black Adam
- Bane
You'll find each character unique in their own ways with their abilities and combos. Along with this, you can unlock various Backgrounds, Icons, and Portraits for your Hero Card you use for both offline and online matches.
All you have to do is play the game with these characters to unlock some neat and cool looking extras.
In the end, I'm not truly a fighting game fanatic. However, I can't frown upon Injustice: Gods Among Us just because I normally don't play fighting games (as of writing this blog post).
The sheer amount of content to unlock is enormous and the longevity is at an all-time high for any game's standard.
If you like DC heroes / villains and fighting games, then this first installment in the Injustice series is a great one to try (or return too)!
Pros:
- Wide Variety of Characters
- Plethora of Unlockables
- Good Music
- Outstanding Level (Arena) Designs
- Longevity
- Customization (Skins, Hero Card, etc.)
Cons:
- Frame Rate Drops during Story Mode Cut Scenes
- Poorly Scripted Battle Mode Text
- Dated Graphics / Character Models
My Rating for Injustice: Gods Among Us (on PS4):
4 / 5
