The Battle of Polytopia
- Reviewed on Mobile -
The Battle of Polytopia released on February 9th, 2016.
Made in the Unity game engine, and developed by Midjiwan AB, The Battle of Polytopia is a Strategy based video game, where your teams' victory (or defeat) solely depends on your managing skills out in the battlefield.
Being specifically a turned based (strategy) game, with either multiplayer against AI or humans, The Battle of Polytopia is an excellent indie game that deserves all the love and attention that I can clearly see Midjiwan AB poured into it (and still are) themselves!
This review WILL have Major Spoilers so keep that in mind before continuing...
Taking place in low poly, randomly generated worlds, The Battle of Polytopia allows you to choose a Tribe and compete in three different game modes, all of which revolve around you growing, training, capturing, and taking full control of your tribes' dominance (and / or score).
The three game modes include Perfection, Domination, and Creative.
Perfection is when you must get the best score possible during gameplay before turn 30 rolls around.
Domination (my favorite game mode) is when you play unlimited turns until all tribes are destroyed and a victor is crowned.
Finally, Creative is where you let your ideas flow as you create your own rules and play The Battle of Polytopia as you'd like.
Now, the most exciting portion of The Battle of Polytopia, are the tribes. As of writing this blog post, there are 16 tribes to choose from. These are...
- Xin-xi
- Imperius
- Bardur
- Oumaji
- Kickoo
- Hoodrick
- Luxidoor
- Vengir
- Zebasi
- Ai-Mo
- Quetzali
- Yadakk
- Aquarion (Special Tribe)
- ∑∫ỹriȱŋ (Special Tribe)
- Polaris (Special Tribe)
- Cymanti (Special Tribe)
The Special Tribes in The Battle of Polytopia are tribes that have unique buildings, technology, and / or units that no other tribe has (think of it as DLC).
Along with this, there is also different Tribe Skins that are essentially just cosmetic items to spice up the battlefield.
Going back to the tribes and their technology, technology in this game is crucial to your tribe's victory.
After each turn (and / or in ruins) you and your tribe will earn stars. These stars are your in-game currency of sorts. When starting a new game, you will have five stars to start with.
You can redeem these stars to "research" technology, on the technology tree.
Each tribe has this tree and some start with a technology item already researched for free!
For example, the Kickoo tribe starts every game with the Fishing skill already researched, and you can then fish right away, right from the start!
Besides the technology tree, you can also use these stars to train units. Units in The Battle of Polytopia range from various different stats and appearances.
Some examples of Units in The Battle of Polytopia are Warriors (common starting unit), Defenders, Riders, Swordsman, and the mighty powerful Super Unit, just to name a few.
All units have calculated stats too, including...
- Health
- Attack
- Defense
- Movement
- Range
The gameplay itself is so much fun and when you really dig deep into how The Battle of Polytopia operates, and how to successfully command a tribe, this mobile game is such a great experience!
To move units (on mobile), you tap them on the screen and then blue circles appear around them.
Tapping these blue circles then moves them, but if you see a red circle, you can attack that indicated enemy unit. Sometimes, killing that enemy unit will make your unit take over that tile on the map.
The maps in The Battle of Polytopia are in top down (somewhat angled) view and have a charming low poly nature to them as stated earlier. They are always randomly generated, and their size depends on how many opponents you choose to have.
The music is outstanding, and the overall atmosphere is incredible with their nature ambience with birds chirping and the ocean(s) waves hitting.
Each tribe has their own tune, and when in-game, you still get a mix of that nature ambience and that specific tribe's melody when researching technology for example.
Because this is a mobile game, some might think there would be a handful of ads to hinder the gameplay / experience... however, there are no ads whatsoever (as of writing this blog post)!
With little, to no, negative features (besides a glitch I've seen with the "Games Played" number in the Throne Room), and so much love and passion poured into this indie game, The Battle of Polytopia is one of the best mobile games I've personally ever played.
If you're up to the challenge of being a tribe's leader and dominating the worlds in front of you, then The Battle of Polytopia is a must play strategy game for all ages!
Pros:
- Outstanding Music and Ambience
- Plenty of Tribes to Choose From
- Multiplayer
- Longevity
- Various Game Modes
- Hints and Tutorials for Newcomers
- Charming Graphics
Cons:
- AI Difficulty isn't too much of a Challenge
- Throne Room, "Games Played" Glitch / Issue
My Rating for The Battle of Polytopia (on Mobile):
5 / 5
