The House of the Dead: Remake

- Reviewed on PS4 -

The House of the Dead: Remake released on April 7th, 2022.

With the original game being released all the way back on September 13th, 1996, this remake strived to capture the originals over the top depiction of zombies, and crazy, horrifying monsters in a mansion.

I never played the original game (as of writing this blog post), but this Remake of the original House of the Dead, did a good job with its graphics, atmosphere, and music.

Unfortunately, the gameplay wasn't to my liking.

This review WILL have Major Spoilers so keep that in mind before continuing...

The House of the Dead: Remake (for PS4) uses two different control schemes, each one depicting a truly different and defining way of playing this (average) hour long game.

You can use the normal PS4 controller, or do what I did, and use the PS4 Move Controllers.

The Move Controllers were fun at first, but I soon found out that constantly shooting and reloading made my hand cramp up.

And to my defense, there is a lot of button mashing in this game that can result in that.

The story is fun and amusing while it lasts, considering there's only four chapters.

However, this game is intended to be played multiple times in order to achieve specific goals / achievements (more on that later).

The House of the Dead: Remake's story is about AMS agent Thomas Rogan (you) going to Dr. Curien's mansion and shooting your way through his creature infested lairs in order to save his romantic partner Sophie Richards.

Using the Move Controllers, all I had to do was point my controller to the PS Camera and once the cursor in the game was where I wanted, I pushed the back trigger in.

Short and sweet concept, but I did notice some delay in the controller's movement on screen.

There is no free movement in The House of the Dead: Remake, it is instead, more like a traditional arcade, rail system.

This can be a downer to some, but in the end, this is an arcade style game to begin with.

The zombies and other creatures come at you in short (wavelength) bursts, and you have limited ammo before being forced to RELOAD. You will hear the game's voice yell that at you constantly!

As you progress through the arcade style horror game, you will see scientists in dire situations, where swift action can either save or kill them.

Saving them all is obviously the goal, but being able to do so is another story, due to the game's fast paced nature.

The House of the Dead: Remake has a ton of trophies / achievements for you to continue playing / replaying, the scientist's lives being one of them. You'll even see a constantly updated picture of the scientists, and a red X over the ones who died after each chapter.

The enemy designs in The House of the Dead: Remake, are actualy pretty cool and unique.

Their different designs make them truly stand out from the tradtional, basic zombie.

The enemies are also classfieid by type. There are A, B, C, D, E, F, and G types, with the occasional Unkown Types.

These type's also have their own statistics such as damage, health, size, etc.

For boss battles, you'll see the type they are, as well as a picture of their weakness(es). Make sure to use this information and quickly defeat them before losing lives.

You'll have a set number of lives during the whole game but can buy more Credits with points you accumulate.

Like stated earlier, playing this game over again is key to fully enjoying everything MegaPixel Studios (the Developers) added in this remake.

There are collectibles to find and quickly shoot (to collect) in the fast gameplay. An Armory to unlock. And even different weapons to find / use.

The House of the Dead: Remake may not have been for me personally, but I can definitely see old school gamers loving this impressive remake and enjoying this fun and quick story.
