Paper.io 2
- Reviewed on Switch -
Paper.io 2 released on August 9th, 2018.
Developed by Voodoo, and serving as Paper.io's sequel, Paper.io 2 is an enjoyable, satisfying, and addicting multiplayer (or single player) experience for all ages!
Simple to understand, fun music, and plenty of unlockables makes Paper.io 2 a worthy addition to any gamer's library.
This review WILL have Major Spoilers so keep that in mind before continuing...
Paper.io 2 is all about controlling your player and filling up portions of the maps by drawing lines and connecting it back to your colored territory.
When you play (at least on single player mode) Paper.io 2, the maps are actually blank canvases of real-world states.
You start in Europe, and as you successfully fill a certain amount (over various games if needed) of the state, you'll unlock new states, and even get to decide which ones to do next.
As you play the actual game, there will be lots of other players trying to draw lines and capture the playing field as well.
You can kill other players by encapsulating them with your drawings (lines), or by hitting them while their trying to gain more ground with their color(s).
When you successfully kill another player (either bots in single player, or real players in online / local multiplayer) you'll see their icons following you and you'll even get faster!
Your player (icon) is a random colored square at first, but as you play the game, you'll accumulate gold.
Unlocking skins in Paper.io 2 isn't the only thing to save up for, as there is also Powerups to upgrade.
These Powerups include...
- Eagle Eye
- Zone Defense
- Fever
- Lives
- Starting Territory
When you upgrade a Powerup, the cost for the next upgrade does go up, which I understand completely, as this makes the longevity and overall experience, more rewarding.
These upgrades essentially make the Powerup(s) (once acquired during gameplay) last longer.
Eagle Eye lets you see a wider view of the playing field to strategize better as you go.
Zone Defense makes your current territory (and player themselves) unkillable.
Fever makes you draw (move) faster.
The Lives Powerup is self-explanatory, as if / when you do die mid game, you have the choice to buy an extra life (normally going up by 1000s). Upgrading Lives gives you more Free chances if you get killed by another player.
Lastly, Starting Territory upgrades increases the size of your spawn point.
Custom Game is a fun alternative to the real-world state levels you'll be used to playing on.
These Custom Games have levels in the shapes of random things instead.
For example, in the Custom Games mode you can play the normal game, but in a Heart, Mermaid, Flower, or even Diamond map (to name a few) instead.
My only true gripe with this otherwise, cheap, and extremely fun title, is the vast amounts of DLC.
Some features are even completely blocked by a paywall like Hats for your icons or other Custom Game maps.
Not a big deal but should've been smaller in size.
Paper.io 2 is an extremely fun, hidden gem on the eShop, and if you have spare change (or Gold Coin Points) from other purchases, then picking this game up would not be a waste!
Pros:
- Fun Music
- Easy Controls
- Plethora of Unlockables
- Vast Amounts of Maps
- Longevity
- Multiplayer
Cons:
- Too Much DLC (and a little pricey)
My Rating for Paper.io 2 (on Switch):
5 / 5
