60 Seconds! Reatomized released on July 25th, 2019.
Made by Polish based studio, Robot Gentleman, 60 Seconds! Reatomized is a heavily strategized, independent game, that caught my eye from the plethora of videos made on it.
The replayability of this game is near infinite, with anyone and everyone having different playthroughs and scenarios.
Your actions, choices, and stories constantly affect one another, resulting in flexible gameplay and playthroughs that could last over an hour, or even less than five minutes.
This review WILL have Major Spoilers so keep that in mind before continuing...
Developed in the Unity game engine, 60 Seconds! Reatomized is actually a remaster of the original title.
This is great for newcomers such as myself, as we can experience the updated graphics, additional game modes, and various endings the game has to offer, right from the beginning!
The main plot of 60 Seconds! Reatomized is about a family, consisting of mother, Dolores, father, Ted, daughter, Mary Jane, and son, Timmy, who must prepare for the inevitable nuclear apocalypse, and take shelter in their own fallout shelter.
You can choose to play as Dolores or Ted, but either way, you must try and keep anyone / everyone alive within the shelter.
There are five game modes to choose from. These are...
- Atomic Drill
- Challenge
- Scavenge
- Survival
- Apocalypse
No matter the mode, your ultimate goal is to survive for as long as possible within the shelter.
Maintaining supplies like food (tomato soup) and water, are only one of many different aspects, to micromanage.
Atomic Drill is the tutorial for the base game.
This is where you'll be introduced to the beginning, 3D portion of the game, where you have to scavenge your home for supplies within 60 Seconds.
You have a few seconds before the timer starts to look around and see what you want to take to the shelter. After those initial seconds, the timer starts with the nuclear war approaching.
You have only four item slots to carry items at a time. You then have to go and drop them off to the fallout shelter hotspot.
What makes this mechanic interesting though, is that you can't collect everything within 60 Seconds, and the items / rooms generated in this beginning portion, are always randomized.
This scavenging also has slippery like controls to make the panic really severe!
Back to the modes, Challenge mode is where you can get cool rewards at the expense of achievements.
Scavenge mode is just the beginning portion of the game, with no Survival included.
Survival is one of my favorite modes as it randomizes the items you start in the fallout shelter with, and you must make do with what / who was given to you.
And lastly, there is Apocalypse mode which is the full gameplay.
After you finish the scavenging and collected who and what you wanted, the true micromanaging begins.
The still frame of the fallout shelter is synonymous with this game.
Whoever made it in your playthrough will be sitting in the center of the shelter with humorous animations.
60 Seconds! Reatomized is a very funny game in my opinion, with many animations, text, and sound effects giving me a chuckle.
I don't like however, the one, repeating, soundtrack during gameplay.
You'll also notice around the characters, are the items / equipment you scavenged.
All these items are updated in real time with what you do with them.
For example, if you give two food cans to survivors in your party, then the next day, they'll be gone, or emptied on the floor in great detail.
You can either use the d-pad, hover over the characters with the joycon cursor, or use the touchscreen to play.
Before clicking / hitting the notepad at the bottom right, you'll see current stats of your family members.
When you click the bottom right journal, you'll be able to read the daily journal entries of the family.
Sometimes you'll see that they brought something back from the surface, lost an item, used something, etc.
After the journal entries, you can then portion the water and food to all surviving family members.
Keeping an eye on their stats is key to keeping them alive.
After the journal entries and portion control is done in this simulation, you'll then see a "What To Do" section.
Here is where randomized events in the game happen.
Sometimes these events are bandits showing up, traders looking to do business, or even a stupid cat coming in and eating your supplies. Trust me, don't let Sharikov in...
A big feature in the main, Survival gameplay, is sending family members to the surface for scavenging.
There will be a line of text that shows how that character is feeling about a potential trip. Some may be up for it, others might be downright refusing. The choice is completely up to you.
Be careful though, as food and water are not the only thing to keep track of.
Medkits, Defense Items, Maps, Radios, Cleaning Supplies, and even small forms of Entertainment, all effect your surviving family members.
There are tons of different endings to this game as well. You can be saved by the military, eaten alive, captured, or even have your shelter overrun by cats (hint hint)!
Slowly micromanaging and going through the daily tasks for every in-game day, can definitely make 60 Seconds! Reatomized a long game for just one session.
I've personally had half an hour, to even an hour long playthrough, at one given time.
60 Seconds! Reatomized is a very strategic game as I stated earlier.
If you don't mind the reading, the slow-paced managing, and the repetitive nature of some of the mechanics, then you'll have fun for a while with this enjoyable title!
