Destroy All Humans!

 - Reviewed on PS4 -

Destroy All Humans! released on June 21st, 2005.

The remake (updated graphics) of Destroy All Humans! released on July 28th, 2020.

For this review, I bought the original PS2 version of the game from the PlayStation Store on my PS4. The story / plot is the same between both versions, the graphics are / is the only difference.

This review WILL have Major Spoilers so keep that in mind before continuing...

To start off, the name of this title insinuates that you do not play as the human race. Instead, you take control of an Alien named Cryptosporidium, or Crypto for short.

I found Destroy All Humans! a very enjoyable / humorous game. Of course, due to the fact this title was made and released in 2005, the dialogue can be a little cheesy and doesn't hold up in today's standards.

Nonetheless, this game provides many memorable tasks.

To progress in the story missions, you have to collect the required amount of DNA.

You can collect DNA by exploring the locations available to you at the time.

If exploring doesn't fit your style of gaming, then in this game, you can use the Cortex Scan, which causes the human's head to explode, and this gives the player (Crypto) DNA.

DNA is also used to upgrade Crypto's Weapons, Ammo, Damage, and his UFO.

Some missions require using the UFO and I didn't really enjoy the UFO missions that much. I found that in order to even stay alive in these missions (using the UFO), you have to be really good at moving around incoming missiles constantly (especially during the last mission of the game).

Crypto (the character you play as) has a boss he must get his mission orders from named Orthopox. Orthopox's mothership is the main central hub world of Destroy All Humans! This is where you can upgrade your arsenal (as mentioned) and also access any locations you have unlocked / discovered.

The full list of locations in Destroy All Humans! are listed below...

    - Turnipseed Farm
    - Rockwell
    - Santa Modesta
    - Area 42
    - Union Town
    - Capitol City

I always found myself excited when I saw that I could go to another new location and even though Destroy All Humans! only has six locations, each area was surprisingly huge for its game era.

The main Antagonist of this title is a mysterious masked, hooded figure named Silhouette.

Towards the ending missions of the game, you find out that (SPOILER) this hooded figure is a female and both Crypto and Orthopox express their disbelief (again this game came out in 2005).

The humor throughout Destroy All Humans! got me and the attitude Crypto shows towards his enemies and even his boss, Orthopox, is memorable.

I found myself struggling a lot during this final boss battle and it is a big con in my review of this title, specifically due to the fact that there are two boss battles, and both take a while to complete, and if you fail one boss battle, you have to restart the entire mission (including fighting the boss you already defeated again).

Controls take a bit of getting use to and like mentioned earlier, the UFO controls are needed in order to complete the final mission (boss battles).

To call this game a masterpiece is a little bit of a stretch, but I can definitely see why this game could / can be another gamer's favorite game of all time.

I had fun turning into other Human's and wondering around the areas for collectibles. Sucking brains from humans as Crypto was fun and this game isn't bloody or gruesome in any way!

The main enemies are robots, military, rockets, and nothing else, simple!

Gameplay is smooth (even for a PS2 title), Humor is not too cheesy for its time, and overall, the story makes sense (for an Alien Si-Fi story).

Pros

    - Memorable Moments, Characters, and Locations
    - Great Story
    - Fun Interaction Options (With Enemies)
    - Great Unlockables
    - Fun Side Missions

Cons:

    - Bland Music
    - UFO Controls
    - Cheesy Dialogue
    - Final Mission Unfairness

My Rating for Destroy All Humans! (on PS4):

3 / 5
