Wii Sports
- Reviewed on Wii -
For its time, Wii Sports used the Wii Motion controls which was a new interactive way players around the world could play Nintendo's new Wii titles.
Wii Sports released on November 19th, 2006.
The cult classic game Wii Sports is known by pretty much every person who knows anything about Video Games.
With the Wii Console being one of the most popular consoles ever (as of writing this blog post) and Wii Sports being a part of the console itself, Wii Sports has grown to be one of the most popular games out there.
Serving as a sports simulation game and a Wii Console exclusive (free with the console), Wii Sports captures the fun of sports with video games perfectly.
This review WILL have Major Spoilers so keep that in mind before continuing...
Wii Sports comes with five fun sports to play alone or with up to four other human players (with the exception of boxing which only allows two human players max).
The sports included are...
- Tennis
- Baseball
- Bowling
- Golf
- Boxing
I personally grew up with Wii Sports and it is one of those games that I occasionally pick up every now and then, but normally I play only one sport per game session before getting bored.
That's not to say these sports are boring but simply the fact that if you're playing alone (which I prefer), you're going to be bored quicker than if you were playing with another person, which is what Wii Sports is actually all about.
The characters for Wii Sports were also revolutionary in the world of Nintendo, as Wii Sports used avatars called Miis.
These Miis would go on to become a regular mechanic for future Wii titles and future consoles like the Switch.
Wii Sports used the Motion controls very well and I never had any bad experience with the Motion controls. Are the Motion controls perfect, no, but they do deliver on a very intense, interactive experience with the player(s).
There are a few customization options in Wii Sports that don't really make a difference in gameplay, and I thought that Nintendo could have done a better job at customizing this launch title personally.
Customization options include a blue tennis court, different bowling balls, and of course your Mii's (avatar) appearance / team color (your set favorite color).
Graphics wise there is a lot to like. For its time, the Wii had its own style per say and Wii Sports looked / looks amazing when playing any of the five sports.
There was an issue I had with the Baseball graphics regarding the audience.
Of course, Nintendo most likely made the audiences colorful circles to save on resources, but I do think that if this was a launch title for the Wii (which was in development for years), they probably had enough time to consider making a better-looking audience.
The five sports included aren't the only game modes, as Wii Sports also includes two other side modes, Training and Wii Fitness.
Training mode is exactly what the name implies, you play alone in different categories relating to the sport you choose.
Wii Fitness is a game mode I have a lot of uncertainty with, as essentially you just play three training mode games (in random order each time) and then based on how well you did, the game gives you an age of how old you supposedly are.
This game mode in my five plus years of having it, never said the right age and nor do I think it ever will (for me personally).
Talking about the sports directly in Wii Sports, I do wish that Baseball had an option for nine innings instead of only three just in case you were playing with other people and wanted a true experience.
I do appreciate Nintendo putting in a ranking mechanic where each individual Mii has their own skill level and after achieving 1000 points or more, you get a pro tag to your name!
Music is amazing in Wii Sports and even though there isn't music during the actual sport events you play, the menu music is very upbeat and truly does put you in an active, energetic mood!
Pros:
- Extremely Fun Multiplayer
- Ranking System
- Lots of Longevity
- Smooth Controls
Cons:
- No Music During Sport(s)
- Wii Fitness Not Accurate
- Not That Many Sports
- Bad Audience Design (Baseball)
My Rating for Wii Sports (on Wii):
3 / 5
