Call of Duty: WWII

- Reviewed on PS4 -

Call of Duty: WWII released on November 3rd, 2017.

Developed by Sledgehammer Games, the same team behind Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and even Call of Duty: Vanguard, Call of Duty: WWII takes you inside the historic events of World War Two and all the major battles that occurred throughout its history.

With outstanding graphics, memorable characters, great sound design, and an intense overall theme of war each level, Call of Duty: WWII is one of the most memorable Call of Duty titles I have ever played (as of writing this blog post).

This review WILL have Major Spoilers so keep that in mind before continuing...

Keeping with the same Call of Duty tradition, Call of Duty: WWII has three main game modes for you to enjoy either in single or multiplayer.

The three, base game modes are...

    - Campaign
    - Multiplayer
    - Zombies

The campaign was, hands down, the most memorable and enjoyable game mode to playthrough for the first time.

The campaign follows the main protagonist, Corporal Ronald "Red" Daniels, as he leaves his wife and unborn child to serve his country in World War Two.

Call of Duty: WWII's campaign starts on the historic D-Day, where from there, you'll battle through (SPOILER) 12 missions, ending with The Rhine and then the Epilogue.

What truly invested me in Call of Duty: WWII's campaign, is the characters, and the fact that these events I was battling / playing through, actually happened in real life.

The campaign evoked true compassion and love for these soldiers from me, and by the end, when (SPOILER) Daniels' best friend Robert Zussman was found alive after fleeing the concentration camps, I was almost near tears... and in a Call of Duty game of all things!

The graphics and rendered cutscenes (as mentioned) were outstanding and very surreal, but the combat and controls were also very well designed and felt satisfying when firing weapons, healing soldiers, etc.

New features in Call of Duty: WWII's campaign, along with the standard mementos (collectibles), were Heroic Actions and Squad Abilities.

Every campaign mission has their set number of collectibles to find, but you can also perform Heroic Actions like saving a soldier's life from an enemy or dragging them to cover.

You do have a set time limit to do these, and you also have to actually be aware that their happening.

Most of the time you'll hear faint screaming that indicates an Action can be performed nearby.

The Squad Abilities require you to rack up some kills mid-mission, but once the circle meter is filled on screen, if / when you're near a squad member that has an ability, you can press a certain button (varied by platform) and retrieve ammo, health, grenades, enemy locations, airstrike, etc.

Multiplayer mode is essentially the same shtick with your varied play modes like Team Deathmatch or Free for All, and you do have your select number of perks, weapons, classes, and maps like usual.

Zombies on the other hand have a unique story element to them instead of simply surviving, which I highly recommend trying as it gives the player(s) a newfound purpose of replaying these maps over and over again.

Melee killing zombies doesn't feel right for some reason, as you have to be in front of the zombies most of the time to get effective kills.

I'm not the biggest fan that Call of Duty: WWII limits offline single player guns for multiplayer and the DLC's are majority of the time required for further enjoyment, but besides that, Multiplayer and Zombies are your standard game modes with additional, unique features.

Call of Duty: WWII was almost a perfect Call of Duty experience for me (as of writing this blog post), but unfortunately, I found the number of campaign missions unsatisfying and the Multiplayer weapon limits to be too excessive to give this a perfect rating.

However, that should never prevent you from playing Call of Duty: WWII, as their campaign alone is one of, if not the best, campaigns to date!

Pros

    - Outstanding Graphics
    - Amazing Sound Design (Gun Fire, Music, etc.)
    - Memorable Characters and Campaign
    - Plethora of Maps (Multiplayer and Zombies)
    - Collectibles
    - Extra Features for Campaign (Heroic Actions and Squad Abilities)

Cons:

    - Unsatisfying Number of Missions (Campaign)
    - Unusual Zombie Melee Kills
    - Lots of Locked Guns (Multiplayer)

My Rating for Call of Duty: WWII (on PS4):

4 / 5
