Eyes: The Horror Game
- Reviewed on Switch -
Eyes: The Horror Game released on February 11th, 2013.
This game brings back many, mobile game era, memories for me.
I remember playing this as a young teen on mobile, and now 12 years later, I'm replaying this classic (at least to me) horror game.
This title, developed by Fearless Games, is very well polished. Gameplay is nice and sturdy. And the overall experience is a short and sweet scare, for you to hop on for a short period of time, whenever and wherever (at least for Switch versions) you want!
This review WILL have Major Spoilers so keep that in mind before continuing...
The logo for Eyes: The Horror Game, is a drooping, singular eyeball, which correlates to a very crucial gameplay mechanic, that I'll discuss in a bit.
The main theme for this hour and a half long (average) game is a creepy, xylophone like soundtrack, with quiet winds, and a childlike voice humming.
The plot of this horror title was originally just you, playing as a thief, and collecting 20 money bags in a creepy mansion.
Now, in the Switch version, we have three levels, more monsters, and more gameplay modes!
You still play as a thief, but you begin to find out about some sort of curse that plagued some unknown citizens... or could those infected people be the monsters?
Some might play this game and not really care about the plot, as the main gameplay is just fine enough.
And I don't blame anyone for doing so. But I do appreciate the deep lore, Eyes: The Horror Game, has.
Speaking of gameplay, as you try to collect 20 money bags, then make it to the exit(s), you're also constantly trying to avoid the main monsters.
Luckily, the main monsters can only get to you within the main halls of each level.
The levels in Eyes: The Horror Game, are...
- Mansion
- Hospital
- School
Quickly going into rooms is a must! Not only will you be safe, but you'll also find more money bags this way.
Along with searching cabinets, drawers, toilets, pretty much anything, you'll also find the singular, droopy eyeball logo painted red on walls.
Collecting these will allow you to temporarily see through the "eyes" of the current monster you're avoiding.
This is a wonderful mechanic, and a crucial element to completing this game.
I managed to beat each level (at least on Normal) fairly easy, by managing my Eye count, and timing my running accordingly.
You can run for a brief period, but then the run mechanic must recharge.
Now, onto the monsters themselves. These include...
- Krasue: A female floating, decapitated, demon head
- Charles: An evil spirit roaming with a cloak and eerie skull like appearance
- Good Boy: A demonic, running dog looking for flesh
Each monster has their own mechanics of their own to make the gameplay change here and there.
Krasue has no special ability but roams the halls.
Charles can teleport through paintings around the level(s).
Finally, Good Boy just roams, but can be distracted briefly with slabs of meat (found in levels).
As you explore and find money bags and eyes, you can also unlock (optional) journal entries to further explain the lore.
The difficulties for each game mode include...
- Newbie
- Easy
- Normal
- Hard
- Nightmare
Eyes: The Horror Game has cool game modes to, to choose from. These are...
- Chapter One: Finding Money Bags in the Mansion with Krasue
- Chapter Two: Finding Money Bags in the Hospital with Charles
- Chapter Three: Finding Money Bags in the School with Good Boy (My Favorite Mode So Far)
- Appendix: Chase a Pumpkin for Coin Bonuses while Avoiding Krasue
- Double Trouble: Complete the level with Krasue and Charles searching for you
- Scream from the Past: Play Chapter One, in an all-Pixelated Format
- Endless Mode: Collect Coins Endlessly, with Increasing Difficulty
- Expert Mode: Essentially Sandbox Mode, where you choose where and who to play with
You can't play all modes right from the start mind you.
Collecting money bags, then either dying or finishing a mode, will grant you coins, to unlock all the features. There are also high scores!
Eyes: The Horror Game has much love online, and is again, a classic title from over a decade ago.
Replaying this game on Switch is a blast, and you can treat this game as a short and sweet, time waster with a jolt of horror.
Or play this like your life depends on it, with its various game modes and difficulties.
The only thing preventing it as a perfect game to me, is the lack of more levels, small typos, and not the best of lore.
Either way though, I highly, highly recommend trying this game as it is also relatively cheap (as of writing this blog post)!
Pros:
- Outstanding Atmosphere (Level Design)
- Great Music
- Plethora of Game Modes (to Support Longevity)
- Collectibles (Journal Entries)
- Good Gameplay Mechanics
- Smooth and Crisp Controls (Hardly Any Glitches at all)
Cons:
- Typos
- Generic Lore that Might Not Keep Player's Attention
- Only Three Levels to Play In
My Rating for Eyes: The Horror Game (on Switch):
4 / 5
