Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? released on August 23rd, 2022.
Developed by Massive Miniteam and published by HandyGames, this Switch 2 version brings the classic quiz show experience right to your console, letting players test their wits against 5th-grade-level questions… and sometimes lose spectacularly.
This review WILL have Major Spoilers so keep that in mind before continuing...
From the moment you boot the game, the production values are immediately impressive.
The graphics are crisp and colorful, giving the game a vibrant, TV-show-quality aesthetic that’s surprisingly polished for a quiz game.
The stage, the desks, the characters—it all looks fantastic on the Switch 2’s screen.
Gameplay follows the classic formula of the TV show: answer questions across multiple subjects, earn points, and try not to fall behind your clever 5th-grade classmates.
What sets this version apart is the variety of subjects and the customization options.
You can unlock dozens of names, desks, classmates, and outfits, letting you build a classroom (and a cast of classmates) that feels personal and fun.
The music perfectly fits the gameshow vibe, giving each round a light, exciting atmosphere that keeps you engaged.
Combined with smooth controls and easy navigation through menus, it’s immediately accessible for players of all ages.
That said… there are some frustrations that prevent this game from being a perfect experience.
The animations—while charming—take far too long, even when skipping.
You often have to wait for a few seconds after pressing skip before the next question appears, which slows down the pace and makes marathon quiz sessions difficult.
Because of this, I can only comfortably play one or two games at a time before needing a break, as the flow of gameplay can get stale very quickly when played in one sitting.
Even so, when played in short bursts, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? is a lot of fun.
Selecting subjects, seeing your classmates react, and customizing your experience keeps each game feeling fresh.
Longevity is strong because of the unlockables and the sheer number of subjects to tackle.
Overall, this is a polished quiz game that’s enjoyable if you approach it in short, focused sessions.
The animations and pacing issues hold it back from being a binge-worthy experience, but the charm, customization, and presentation are top-notch.
Pros:
- Excellent graphics and stage design
- Great longevity with many subjects and unlockables
- Fun customization options: names, desks, classmates, and outfits
- Music matches the gameshow vibe perfectly
- Easy-to-use controls and menus
Cons:
- Animations take too long, even when skipping
- Gameplay can get stale quickly in one sitting
