Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle released on January 20th, 2018.
Developed and published by Blue Wizard Digital, I decided to give this game a try as a brand-new fan of the Friday the 13th horror series.
I’m happy to say it ended up being a fun, if somewhat short-lived, experience—especially for fans of Jason and his infamous legacy.
This review WILL have Major Spoilers so keep that in mind before continuing...
The first thing that immediately grabbed me was the art design.
It’s cute, colorful, and quirky—almost charmingly so for a horror game.
It’s definitely my favorite aspect of this title, and it gives the puzzles a lot of personality.
The music does match the horror aesthetic, but it’s nothing memorable.
It sets the mood but doesn’t stick in your head after a session.
Gameplay revolves entirely around puzzle mechanics.
You play as Jason, methodically eliminating campers and citizens in each level without letting them escape, fight back, or trigger a game-over scenario.
The puzzles gradually scale in difficulty, and I found the progression to be very well-balanced.
The core mechanic is simple, but each level requires careful planning and a bit of strategy.
A cool addition is the Bloodlust meter.
Successfully landing fatal kills on the last camper boosts this meter, which rewards you with random tiered weapons as you level up.
You can also trade in weapons to unlock the full library for Jason, giving plenty of incentive to keep experimenting.
On top of that, there’s a variety of Jason skins and multiple locations/worlds to unlock, which adds a surprising amount of replay value for what is essentially a mobile puzzle game.
If you ever get stuck, Jason’s mom is there to help—she can give tips, hints, or even fully reveal solutions to levels at no cost.
This is a nice quality-of-life touch that keeps frustration to a minimum, and it shows the developers cared about accessibility for casual players.
That said, I have to admit my attention span didn’t hold up for long sessions.
The gameplay loop is fun, but I could only play in short bursts of 5–10 minutes before needing a break.
For some, this could actually be a positive—it makes the game a perfect little “time waster” for fans of the franchise.
Overall, Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle is a solid, casual horror puzzle game.
It’s visually appealing, mechanically sound, and a fun way for fans of Jason to interact with the series in a new way.
Just don’t expect marathon sessions of nonstop gameplay—this one is best enjoyed in short bursts.
Pros:
- Charming and unique art design
- Well-balanced puzzle difficulty scaling
- Variety of weapons, skins, and locations
- Bloodlust meter and unlockable progression
- Accessibility features (tips and hints from Jason’s mom)
Cons:
- Attention span required is short; long sessions can feel tedious
- Gameplay is limited in scope (short time-waster rather than a full-fledged game)
My Rating for Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle (on Switch 2):
4 / 5
