Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate

- Reviewed on Switch 2 -

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate released on July 17th, 2024.

Developed by Super Evil Megacorp and published by Viacom International, this rogue-lite brawler brought the classic TMNT universe to life in a fresh, accessible way.

This review WILL have Major Spoilers so keep that in mind before continuing...

I’ll admit, I haven’t played many TMNT games before, but jumping into Splintered Fate on Switch 2 was a blast.

The game is easy to pick up, smooth to play, and instantly satisfying, which is a big plus for newcomers or casual players like me.

The story is simple but effective: the turtles are on a mission to rescue Master Splinter from Shredder.

While straightforward, it wraps nicely around the rogue-lite brawler gameplay, giving a sense of progression and stakes as you fight your way through sewers, docks, city streets, and rooftops.

Each location feels fun and memorable, and the variety keeps things fresh throughout.

Side characters like April O’Neil, Casey Jones, and Metalhead are a welcome addition, adding personality and nostalgia to the world without feeling forced.

The writing gives just enough TMNT lore for newcomers and fans alike to enjoy.

Gameplay is where this game really shines.

Fighting feels tight and responsive, and each turtle plays distinctively, with unique strengths, weaknesses, special attacks, and tools.

Donatello quickly became my favorite to play, thanks to his versatility and fun move set.

The rogue-lite elements, power-ups, upgrades, and currency systems (Scrap, Dragon Coins, and Dreamer Coins) are well-designed, encouraging experimentation and rewarding repeat runs.

The game never experienced frame rate drops or glitches on Switch 2, which makes for a smooth, reliable experience.

Arcade Mode is a blast, and both local and online multiplayer work great, offering a fun way to team up or compete with friends.

That said, the game isn’t perfect. The soundtrack is pretty forgettable, which is disappointing given how much atmosphere and energy good music can bring to a TMNT title.

Also, there are only four chapters in the main story, making a full-price purchase feel a little light.

The available DLC adds three more characters and a small run with Casey Jones, which is a nice bonus but not a full replacement for a longer base game.

Even so, I’d recommend this game, especially if you catch it on sale.

It’s fun, accessible, and a solid introduction to TMNT games, even for someone like me with little prior experience.

Pros

    - Engaging story that complements the rogue-lite gameplay
    - Fun and memorable locations (sewers, docks, streets, rooftops)

Cons:

    - Forgettable music
    - Only four chapters in the main story
    - Full price feels a bit high (sale recommended)
